Joshua 23:1-13

“When in the course of Human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
 
Signed on July 2 and adopted in the Congress on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence set free the 13 colonies of America from its rule by Great Britain.
Richard Stockton, a Quaker from New Jersey, was one of the 56 signers of that declaration.  Stockton, in 1758, helped to construct the Quaker Meeting house near his home.  Stockton was a prominent lawyer and landowner until the day that he signed that declaration.  The English army routed him and his family from their home, and he was imprisoned as a traitor to the crown.  As a result of his harsh treatment, his health was broken.  After his imprisonment he returned to the burned and sacked remnants of his home and died there four years later at the age of 51.  His is only one of the stories of these 56 men- many others tell the same story of men who gave their life for freedom.

Human Rights

Today more than ever, we hear people insisting that their “rights” be given to them – even rights that they don’t really have.  As followers of Jesus Christ, we cannot help but wonder if we have the same or different rights as others, what our rights really are, and what we are supposed to do when our rights are denied us.  Do we have a right to safety, success, and wealth?  Do we have a right to expect respect and common decency from others?  Do we have a right to worship God in any way that we are convinced is appropriate?  How about a right to a good home, a loving family, and a good name?

The people of Jesus’ day were no different than us, and He was well aware of it.  We see Jesus teaching an entirely new view on centuries of traditions and suppositions.  Jesus Christ, God-in-the-flesh, has been stretching out the accurate and precise view of God on how true children of God are to think, feel, and act.  Generation has followed generation, and mankind has become ever more deeply entrenched in a flesh-view and a worldview of rights that collide with the view of heaven.

Christians And Political Activity

As we approach the delicate subject of Christians and political activity, it seems appropriate to take a look at what The Word of God has to say about Christians and Politics / Government. We are particularly concerned with the fact that all too many people, especially Christians, have just thrown up their hands and dropped out of the political process. They don’t bother to inform themselves, seek out the right candidates or even vote. The attitude seems to be…”They’re going to do what they want to do anyway”…whomever they are.

Two topics will help us gain a better comprehension of why Christians need to be involved in our political process.  We need to understand these things:
(1. What the Word describe as the biblical functions of government.
(2. What the Word says about the biblical responsibilities of godly government officials.

Political Correctness: The Enemy Of The Church

I. The History of Being Politically Correct

Political correctness is a term used to describe language, ideas, policies, or behavior seen as seeking to minimize offense to racial, cultural, or other identity groups. Conversely, the term “politically incorrect” is used to refer to language or ideas that may cause offense or that are unconstrained by orthodoxy (conforming to the usual beliefs or doctrines). Some have argued that this term “political correctness” was invented by conservatives to discredit progressive social change, especially with respect to issues such as race, religion, and gender. The term is not a new term and can be traced all the way back to the 1700s in the United States and possibly even earlier than that in Europe. The whole premise around being politically correct is to not offend others by the things we say, the policies we support, or the way we act.  It covers a wide range of ideas and actions that would govern what we should and should not be doing.  Here is the question that each of us should begin thinking about: “How much of our “Christianity in practice” are we willing to give up in order to be politically correct?"

Boldness in the 21st Century

What makes a person bold?

There are two well-known Biblical illustrations of boldness.
First: Jesus had just been arrested by the temple guards and Romans. In the courtyard, the disciples ran for their lives.  Peter was hiding in the shadows, recognized and accused of being one of Jesus’ followers. Three times, out of fear, Peter denies even knowing Jesus.

Second: Peter and John boldly teach Jesus rose from the dead. Arrested and brought before a council, they were commanded to stop teaching. In response, Peter and John said they could not stop teaching and preaching in the name of Jesus Christ.

If we could discover what happened to them, and have the same thing happen to us and every Christian today, the world would be turned right-side up.

red homosexual and transgendered disease summit (known officially as the Maine LGBTI [Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgendered, and Intersexed] Health Disparities Summit 2008, the Maine LGBTI Health Summit: Challenges, Opportunities, Change, and the Maine LGBTI Health Summit) took place all day at the Augusta Civic Center on May 29.


Controversial anti-Christian and anti-religious statements were made by a workshop leader during the late morning session called "It Isn’t Easy Being Young and Queer. ...Health Disparities in the LGBTI [Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgendered, and Intersexed] Youth Community."  

During his opening remarks, Outright Lewiston/Auburn Queer and Transgendered Youth Coordinator Ryan Conrad stated extemporaneously: "We all need not have space [in Maine] for the Christian Civic League, that vile organization.  Not in my town."

Is Church Attendance Necessary?

1 Timothy 3:14-3:15

Considering the lax attitudes of many religious people today, it would be easy to conclude that church attendance is optional or perhaps only for those who are very religious and extremely dedicated to their faith. This is especially true in New England.  Membership rosters in most churches, compared to actual numbers in attendance, usually tell the story of people's attitude.  According to God's word, church attendance is not optional.  The Bible and common sense teach us that church attendance is not just a smart thing, it is a necessary thing.  It's the beginning of growing up in the Lord.

Not Forsaking
"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more, as you see the day drawing near." (Heb. 10:23-25)

God's Country
Paulie and I just returned from a trip to the New York City area.  I am always astounded at the difference between Maine and the big city.  Maine has wide open spaces. The big city has people herded like cattle, then packed into subway cars like sardines. Maine is peaceful and tranquil. The city is filled with the clack and clatter of the subway, the wail of ambulances, and the non-stop blaring and honking of car horns. 
 
It is with good reason that tourists who start arriving here this time of year call our state "God's Country."  It is easy to glorify God when one sees birch trees standing by the water's edge, or a patch of green ferns quietly unfolding their leaves in search of the cool, moist air of a Maine morning.

Honoring the Bubars
Virginia Bubar and Mike Heath
Yesterday I enjoyed myself.  I honored the League's legacy.  I spent some time visiting with Virginia Bubar.  Virginia is Ben's widow.

A columnist recently pointed out the similarities between Benjamin Bubar Jr. and me.  He remarked on our willfulness, and commitment to moral principle.

I can never hope to achieve Ben's stature, of course.  He is gone to heaven now.  He was known for a smile that wouldn't quit.  Ben smiled no matter what his political adversaries said  about him.  Before Ben died over a decade ago I visited with him nearly a dozen times in his home.  He taught me an old truism which I've learned is basically true.  He said of the critics in the media, "Don't worry about it as long as they spell your name right!"

Modernism In the Evangelical Church?

I was introduced to the "Featured Sermon Of The Week" by By Kevin DeYoung on the Pulpit Helps web site, entitled Thinking Twice About the Emergent Movement.  Below are some excerpts from that sermon which describes the embracing of the modernist movement by the evangelical church.

See if you recognize any of these characteristics:

I realized a number of years ago that it didn’t matter if I was against all the things I should be against, if I wasn’t for anything. 

Ephesus’ lovelessness manifested itself in another kind of sin: not just a lack of life-giving fellowship but a lack of life-giving witness.  The church was so busy battling and protecting and defending, that they had turned inward to self-protection and suspicion.  They were navel-gazers, with no vision or purpose outside themselves.  They were great at keeping the world out of the church, but they were terrible at taking the church out into the world.

Transgendered Lobby Vows to Block Christians at Polls
League's Heath to EqualityMaine: Apologize For This Intimidation Campaign

Maine's leading homosexual and cross-dressing lobby publicly declared this week to "build a presence at hundreds of polling places" this June 10th in an effort to prevent
Christians, social conservatives, evangelicals, and traditional marriage supporters from signing the YES for Marriage and Equality pro-family referendum petitions.

In a May 14th article from the homosexual New England Blade publication, EqualityMaine's Executive Director Betsy Smith "outlined...a plan that asks volunteers to stand with the people the [Christian Civic] League recruits to collect signatures for the petition."

Christian Civic League of Maine Executive Director Michael Heath said, ""I think it is disgusting that so-called 'gay' groups plan on harassing dear Christian grandmothers on Primary Election Day."

"They need to call off this totalitarian campaign of intimidation and apologize," said Heath, "Yesterday wouldn't be soon enough."

Pastor’s Briefing

Pastors serving on the Christian Civic League Board of Directors. Left to right are Rev. John Eckhart, Rev. Dan McNutt, Rev. Rick Carver and Rev. Dallas Henry. All attended the Pastors Briefing in Washington D.C.
Nine League Board members and wives attended the Pastor’s Briefing sponsored by The Family Research Council, which was held May 7th through May 9th.  We were all blessed and challenged by the nationally-known public servants of God who reported on various situations concerning the spiritual condition of our nation. 

In addition to this informative seminar we were treated to a guided tour of our nation’s capitol building, narrated by David Barton.

We heard reports on what we all knew was so true; our nation’s only hope is if it repents and turns back to God.  We learned how dismal the Christian voter turnout was in the 2006 election; the voter turnout by homosexuals, on the other hand, was over 95%.

Some have said that a nation has the leaders it deserves, while others have said that the leadership of a nation reflects the spiritual condition of that nation.  Both comments reflect negatively on the Church.

Maine's "Queer" Boys' Workshop Canceled
Boys to Men Director Gregory Cites "Lack of Interest" for Homosexual Youth Class

Maine's Boys to Men organization unceremoniously canceled their 2008 conference's "Queer, Questioning, Quiet: Developing Gender Identity & Male Sexual Orientation" workshop at their annual conference on May 13.  The group's Executive Director, Layne Gregory, cited "lack of interest" and participation from the boys attending the conference as the reason for the boys' homosexual workshop cancellation.

She noted that the Christian Civic League of Maine's reporter "was one of the only ones" to register for the "Queer" boys' workshop.  Not discouraged by the cancellation, she went on to say, "We feel it is important to offer this kind of thing each year at our conference."

Other workshops were held at the conference, including one led by Planned Parenthood of Northern New England representatives.  The "Real Life. Real Talk. Sex in the Movies" morning workshop attracted fifty young boys.

I Might Vote for Tom Allen
I can't imagine doing it, but I am thinking about it.  I might vote for Tom Allen.  The most expensive political contest in Maine history is shaping up.  Senator Susan Collins is being challenged by Representative Tom Allen.  Collins is a Republican.  Allens is a Democrat.  The race will be close.

Colliins is to the left of Allen on gay rights.  Click here to read our story.

I first said I'm thinking about voting for Tom Allen on WVOM 103.9 Wednesday morning with Ric Tyler and George Hale.  I said it after I left George sort of speechless.  I informed him on air of the Collins office policy to protect cross dressers.  It is this very radical policy that earned Collins the endorsement of America's radical homosexuality-pushing group, the Human Rights Campaign.  They didn't endorse Allen.

Why Senator Collins thinks she needs to out-gay her Democratic rival is a puzzle.  It was obvious at the convention that there are many people with common sense in the Republican Party.  They don't want anyone mistreated or harmed for choosing to be sexually immoral.  They also don't want any Maine citizens getting special government rights simply because they identify as a crossdresser.  Maine currently provides special rights to bisexuals and crossdressers.

I suspect there are many common sense Democrats.  Their party, however, is institutionally supportive of the gay agenda.  Maine's Republican Party offers tepid resistance.  Anything is better than nothing in this case.

The Subtle Threads of Deceit

The iron chains and sturdy hawsers our Yankee forebears used to steady their sailing vessels were massive and strong, strong enough to launch a six-masted schooner at Bath or to hold the Battleship Maine at anchor in Havana harbor. Yet even these chains seem small compared to the Great Chain once laid across the Hudson River to blockade an invading British navy. A marvel of Yankee industry and ingenuity, the Great Chain spanned six hundred yards, weighed forty-five tons, and was made from hundreds of links, each more than two feet in length.

There is a chain that is mightier yet, one spun from something as light and as hard to see as a spider's thread. This subtlest of threads is made from suggestion, deceit, and insinuation. One thread is spun out, laid onto another, and woven together until it becomes strong enough to pull down entire nations. 

The first link in the chain was forged by Wilhelm Reich, a psychoanalyst and radical activist. In 1929 Reich published a book entitled "The Sexual Revolution, or Sex in the Culture War." The ultimate goal of Reich's proposed sexual revolution, oddly enough, had nothing to do with sexual morality. Its goal was to bring about a real revolution by undermining the institution of the family.

You Be The Judge

Matthew 7:1 "Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”  [NIV]

People who normally scoff at the Bible, reject its teachings, and ridicule its content love to quote this verse at just the right time to shut the mouths of those who promote Godly values in the public square. 

Some familiar statements they try to silence are: “Homosexuality is a sin!”  “There is no such thing as a Christian homosexual!”  “All pre-marital sex is wrong.”  “A man and a woman living together who are not married are committing adultery.”  “Abortion is murder.”  ‘It is the killing of a human being and those doctors who perform abortions, except for very rare exceptions, are guilty of taking innocent human life.”

Now when those statements are made the world immediately trots out their favorite verse in the Bible: "Judge not, that ye be not judged."  This raises a question, "Should a Christian judge?"  The answer of Jesus was not an outright “no”, as some people think.   The answer of Jesus was "It all depends."

In the rest of the passage Jesus tells us to be watchful of three things - logs, dogs, and hogs.   You’ve got to use some type of judgment to identify any and all of them.  Jesus gives us three principles to help us answer the question: "Should you judge?"

League Delivers Relief to Flood Victims in Fort Kent

I ended Thursday night, the National Day of Prayer, in Mars Hill at a prayer meeting, and started Friday morning with preachers!  I joined some pastors for breakfast.  We lamented the situation in Fort Kent, and all pledged to do what we could.  One pastor asked if any non-monetary help was needed.  I told him that I didn't know, at that point.

My son, Jared, is with me on the trip.  He is driving, helping out dear ole dad.  I feel safe having a U.S. Marine Corp Corporal in the drivers seat, even if he is only 19 years old.  Ooooh  Ahhh!

After breakfast we made a couple media stops and arrived in Fort Kent before noon.  We were slowed in our journey by a full-size pick up truck towing a giant orange high-capacity pump.  He was, no doubt, headed for a basement in the flooded town.

The flood had receeded dramatically by the time we arrived on the scene, but the water was still visible in many places where it didn't belong.  Clouds floated lazily in a deep blue northern Maine sky.  The angry flood waters of the St. John showed no interest in putting a reflected sky blue smile on its surface.  On the contrary the river's water was in a foul muddy mood as it rushed to the atlantic, to the relief of some weary victims, I'm sure.

Maine's Collins "Grateful" For Pro-Homosexual Endorsement
HRC Nod Due In Part to GOP Senator's Pro-Transgendered Office Policies

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins
The pro-homosexual, pro-transgendered Human Rights Campaign announced its endorsement of U.S. Senator Susan Collins for re-election on April 28, a development that garnered very little media coverage within Maine.


Both Collins and the HRC responded with comment on the endorsement:  Sen. Collins said, "I am grateful to have the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign..."  Brad Luna, HRC Spokesman said (emphasis added), "Sen. Susan Collins is a strong ally for the GLBT [Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, & Transgendered] community, supporting a fully inclusive [federal] employment protection bill, a fully inclusive [federal] hate crimes bill, and funding for critical HIV/AIDS programs."

Lisette Fee, Member Services Manager at the HRC, gave a fourth and fifth reason for the endorsement:  Collins's own policy on the hiring and promotion of homosexuals, bisexuals, and the transgendered, both in her Washington, D.C. and Maine U.S. Senate offices, and Collins's repeated opposition to the Federal [Traditional] Marriage Amendment.

The Bible

The Bible is a collection of 66 books, 39 in the Old Testament or Old Covenant, and 27 in the New Testament or New Covenant. 

All the books of the Bible, written over a timeline of around 1600 years, give a consistent picture of who God is, who we are, what God wants, and what we can expect depending on our choices in this life.  The Bible reveals the story of how God has dealt with mankind, His chosen nation of Israel and His New Covenant people, the Church.  The Bible speaks with the same authority and relevance today regarding who He is and what He is doing in our times.  It speaks to us regarding what will happen in the future and how God will change everything.

The Bible is not just a book of rules and ancient history.  It contains thousands of wonderful promises which are constantly applicable to all who believe in Him.  The challenge that mankind faces today is to know, understand and experience the wonderful things that God promises to do for those who believe.  God's promises in the Bible guarantee us more than enough for all our needs in every area.  The only condition is to trust and obey God, and expect Him to do what He says He will do.  If we don't we are the losers.

League Responds to Northern Maine Flooding
Much of downtown Fort Kent is under water today.
After learning the extent of the flooding in northern Maine, Michael S. Heath,  Executive Director of the Christian Civic League of Maine, interrupted a busy schedule Thursday to meet with church leaders in Aroostook County to determine how the League can help victims of the flood. It was reported early Thursday morning that over one hundred homes in Fort Kent were flooded by the St. John and Fish rivers.  Flood stage for the Fish River is 11 feet, but early Thursday morning, the river exceeded 14.5 feet.  Downtown Fort Kent was evacuated, as were the residents of a housing complex for senior citizens.  Onlookers expressed shock at seeing homes moved from their foundations and drifting downstream. Over six hundred families were evacuated.  Many in Fort Kent are reported to have lost their homes or livelihoods.
